How to Prepare a Compelling CV

The majority of jobs today, from entry level to executive positions, require that you submit your CV as part of the application process.  It tells a prospective employer who are and what you have to offer.  Many people choose to write their own CV; others prefer to use a professional CV writing service.  Ultimately, you want to present a compelling CV that leads to an interview.  In order to achieve this, you want to present a CV that is concise and customized.

Concise

A length of two pages is usually sufficient for a CV; one page is entirely appropriate for recent graduates and those with limited work experience.  Leave out personal information such as:  age, height and weight, marital status, family details, photos, and details about personal interests and hobbies.  Unless this information is directly related to the job you are applying for, it is irrelevant and lengthens your CV unnecessarily.   Similarly, it is often unnecessary to list in detail all of the duties associated with past jobs.  Instead, focus on summarizing your major responsibilities and achievements.

Customized

A common practice among employers is to search for “keywords” in a CV.  This helps them to eliminate candidates who don’t appear to have the required qualifications.  To ensure your CV is not eliminated during this initial screening, customize it to the job you are targeting.  Make sure it contains as many words and terms from the job posting as possible.   If the job posting is very specific in certain areas, include these specifics in your CV.  Many people have a standard CV, which they customize as necessary for each of the jobs that they apply for.  This can go a long way in demonstrating that your skills and qualifications are a match for the job in question.

A concise CV is easy to review, and it highlights your strengths.  A customized CV shows that you meet the job’s requirements.  Combined, these two characteristics will help you to create a compelling CV prospective employers can’t ignore!
